When Gym Floor Protection Is Actually Necessary

Do all gyms need floor protection?

Not every gymnasium requires a floor protection system. If a facility is used exclusively for athletics—such as basketball, volleyball, and physical education—and strictly enforces a "sneakers only" policy, additional covering is generally unnecessary. However, most schools utilize their gyms for more than just sports.

The "Multi-Use" Threshold

Protection becomes necessary as soon as "non-athletic" variables are introduced. This includes any event involving street shoes (dances, assemblies), furniture (graduations, testing), or food and drink (banquets). Once these elements enter the gym, the risk of damage spikes significantly.

Frequency Matters

Schools that host only one assembly a year might manage with temporary mats. However, schools with regular weekly or monthly non-sporting events will see a rapid return on investment from a full-coverage system by preventing cumulative wear and tear.

Evaluating Risk

Ultimately, the decision comes down to risk tolerance. If a school cannot afford unplanned refinishing or sanding due to accidental damage, implementing gym floor protection is a prudent preventive measure.
