Moisture Risks and Gym Floor Damage

Can plastic floor covers trap moisture and damage gym floors?

Yes, trapping moisture is one of the most significant risks associated with using improper gym floor covers. Hardwood floors are hygroscopic, meaning they absorb and release moisture from the air. When an impermeable barrier like a plastic tarp is laid down, it disrupts this natural equilibrium.

The "Greenhouse Effect"

If a floor has any residual moisture from cleaning, or if humidity rises from the concrete slab below, a plastic cover traps this vapor against the wood surface. This can soften the finish (making it gummy) or cause the wood planks to expand and "cup" (edges curl up).

Spill Containment vs. Breathability

While it is important to stop liquid spills from entering the floor from above (e.g., a spilled soda), the underside of the protection system must allow vapor to escape. High-quality systems use breathable backings or specialized materials that balance liquid resistance with vapor permeability.

Long-Duration Events

The risk increases with time. A tarp left down for a weekend is risky; one left down for a week during humid weather can be disastrous. Using breathable gym floor protection mitigates this danger, allowing covers to safely remain in place for longer events.
