How Gym Floors Get Damaged During Events

What causes damage to gym floors during non-athletic events?

Damage to gym floors during non-athletic events is primarily caused by static load compression (from furniture), abrasive debris (from street shoes), and impact loads (from staging or equipment). These factors can compromise both the finish and the wood fibers of the athletic surface.

Compression Dents

Metal folding chairs and tables concentrate weight into very small surface areas (the feet). This pressure often exceeds the wood's hardness rating, leaving permanent "divots" or compression marks that cannot be sanded out easily.

Abrasive Wear

Street shoes carry grit, sand, and small stones. As hundreds of guests walk across an unprotected floor, this debris acts like sandpaper, rapidly dulling the glossy finish and exposing the wood to moisture and dirt.

Rolling Loads

Moving pianos, risers, or AV carts across a floor can leave deep scratches or grooves. Even "non-marking" wheels can cause indentation if the load is heavy enough. Using adequate gym floor protection acts as a sacrificial barrier, absorbing these impacts so the hardwood doesn't have to.
